Pic of the week - CW 43
Oct. 23rd, 2014 12:19 amThis week's pic has a much smaller thumbnail with the hope it won' trigger anything unpretty for those who have problems with images of small, living rodents.
We're having problems with martens on/under our roof for some time now. Our roof has two parts, one with an attic, which is partly above the bedroom, and one without. On the part without there has been more than one marten living between the tiles and the extra protection tarp underneath, or even under the latter and in between the insulation material. This is not good, but not too bad either, and we're in the process of having the tiles made inaccessible.
But then, on Saturday night, Siljan complained of sounds from the attic - as in little paw sounds. We haven't finished the ceiling of the bedroom yet, and for the moment it's nothing but another kind of tarpaulin with a dust-protecting cloth-like one beneath, and all the insulation material on top and between the beams. The attic does not have a proper floor, just a kind of gangway in the middle; otherwise it's just the insulation material everywhere. Anyway, we thought the sounds were caused by the marten moving there (quite understandably, as there is much more room and much thicker and softer insulation material) and were rather afraid, as on this side he could do considerable damage. We decided to call a roofer on Monday. But then Siljan was so annoyed Sunday nigh that he went up at 3am with a torch to talk to the marten or something, and he actually saw it! Just that it was not a marten, but - much to our relief - a mouse. :o) So we bought two life traps instead, googled for the most suitable bait and put one with peanut butter and one with Nutella in the attic. The peanut butter melted as it was still warm enough outside, but the Nutella trap cought a pretty wee mousie the next night:
We set her free far away from feline intervention, and she escaped quite happily. Tonight we found a second one in the second trap, now also Nutella-armed, but sadly she was dead; her tail had been injured and she must have died of shock or from the injury or so. :o(
Now I also finally now what to use when I need to catch an escaped prey mouse in the living room again... so far I have used peanut butter, but Skrållan had always been faster so we could not save it.
