Disclaimer: This is a work of transformative fiction based on JRR Tolkien's creation, done purely for enjoyment. No money is being made. I promise to give the characters back more or less as I found them.
Notes: A collection of scenes and snippets following up to Elemental, written for the Back to Middle-earh Month / B2MEM.
The inspiration for this story originates from a prompt of the B2MeM 2018 challenge. I never finished it, then took it up again in the following years, each time to include a new prompt from the respective challenge. It’s been rewritten at least twice since then, and I honestly don’t know if any of the previous prompts are still identifiable. The final version is for B2MeM 2021, and I’m using prompts from one of the B2MeM 2019 Bingo cards, The Apothecary Garden, as inspiration for some of the scenes.
Many thanks to [personal profile] curiouswombat for the beta, all remaining mistakes are my own.
Summary:
Maglor wanders. Elrond dreams of Maglor and goes on a search.

19. Meeting

(Prompt 27: Parents)
-(o)-

Elrond had always refused to believe that Maglor was dead.

People said it was just folk-tales that Maglor still wandered the shores and sang his laments. He had not been seen since that fateful day, he must have followed his brother.

Elrond thought differently. Maglor was strong, he would come back.

Out on patrol, one day, at the coast, they saw a lone figure in the distance. Elrond knew it must be him.

Proceeding alone and on foot, he approached.

The other just stood.

Unkempt, scraggy, with a blank, half-wild gaze. Barely recognisable.

Elrond extended his hand.

“Atto.”

Notes: This drabble is a follow-up to my recent story Elemental and intended as a little thank-you to all those kind souls who left kudos for this story!

20: Lovers

(Prompt 23: Lovers)
-(o)-

His steps guide him faithfully along the paths they had walked together so often, sometimes talking, sometimes in companionable silence.

He feels closest to her here, among the shrubs and herbs she had planted in elaborate ornamental designs, and remembers with fondness their mutual delight in the shared love of all things growing.

Most times, her garden brings him comfort and solace. But on some days the pain of her loss is so sharp breathing becomes difficult, and he sinks down, ripping off twigs and leaves and tearing out tufts and stems, destroying their work.

“Why have you left me?”

This is a photo story, so image-heavy. I down-sized the images for your convenience; clicking on them gives you the full view, which I recommend, as I think they work best in a large size. Also, both parts of the story have been split into short chapters to give the photos room to work. The story can be read without the photos, too; I've tried to give a concise description in the alt-tags.

This is somewhat experimental in style, also in being a joint text/photo story. The first part, titled Water Music, was originally a vignette for a SWG challenge I did not complete. Following the inspiration of two B2MeM 2017 prompts as well as a visit to the Lofotes last summer, this part has now been rewritten and continued in the second part, both completed by photos I took on that journey.
The idea of Maglor coming out of whatever mental state he had been in after the events of the First Age and the Oath of Fëanor - the loss of his brothers, the deeds they have done under the oath  and so on - has always intrigued me. I do not follow the fanon idea of Maglor being guilt-ridden and severely depressive for the rest of his life, or the largest part of it; but I do believe that there must have been a time when dealing with the immense loss he has suffered, and the likely immense guilt he carries, must have affected his mental state to a significant degree. Conveying this into tale is difficult, and I am trying here an approach that feels natural to me.
I’m trying to write this from the point of view of a person coming out of deep depression, and after having been lost in a deep mental turmoil. I’m not talking about some specific mental state or illness, but just wrote what felt natural to me for the character. I’m also basing this to a small degree on personal experience, as I suffered from a more or less severe depression for several years; and Maglor finding a way back into normal life on my own experience of doing the same. I have never been half as deep down as the Maglor in my story has been, though, or have been as badly affected as so many others living with depression.
These two vignettes only show Maglor’s first steps in that direction; two more parts already exist as drafts, but might not be finished for a while.
Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat  for beta reading and for generally being awesome!

Summary: "Each morning, Maglor started off along the beach, following the ebb and flow of the waves. Every day he walked until he grew tired and needed a rest. Then he sat, watching the sea and the sky, and then he walked again."

Written for SWG's 10th Birthday Challenge using the prompt generator for the two following elements:

Theme: suffering
Story Element: seashells and pearls

Strictly speaking, this drabble doesn't fit in the general theme of this drabble set, as it's about young Elrond growing up with the Fëanor brothers. It was inspired by one of the 100 prompts and while pondering new drabbles for the set, though, so I'm keeping it in. (Anything to get my drabble muse going again...) Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shadowycat for the quick beta!
